The plumbing and heating systems in your property are very complicated, there are small things you can do yourself to ensure your plumbing is well maintained, such as bleeding radiators. However due to the use of water, gas and in some cases electric in these complex systems, any major plumbing work should always be carried out by a trusted qualified plumber – not only for safety, but piece of mind that the plumbing in your property is work efficiently.
How do I bleed a radiator?
If one of two or your radiators are cold when the heating is on, it could be a sign that air or dirt is trapped in your heating system. If you have a radiator that is cold when the others are warm, then repressurising your system should be the first thing you do. Firstly turn your heating off and wait for it to cool, next using a radiator key or screwdriver depending on your heating setup, slowly open the valve with a rag or towel to adsorb any water escaping the radiator. Allow the air to escape the radiator until water starts to flow, then close the valve.
If this hasn’t improved the efficiency of your radiator, then it may need a clean, the dirt from pipes and the water inside can build up over time causing the level of your heating to drop. In that case it is best to call a trusted plumber to clean your system. We offer an affordable MagnaClean service that will get your heating back up to scratch, take a look for more information.
What should I do if my radiator is leaking?
Radiators are fixed directly to pipes either from the wall or the floor, sometimes the nut securing them can come loose, in which cases you can tighten them yourself with a suitable spanner. If this doesn’t solve the problem, then you will need a plumber to take a look. Give us a call, no job is too small, we are always happy to help out.
What is an air vent/bleed valve?
Bleed valves are on most radiators to allow the owner to release air from their heating system, as described above. They are normally at the top of the radiator to one side and are either a square head or sometimes require a flat head screwdriver to open them.
